“Beauty and the Beast” Inspired
It’s a tale as old as time, and I couldn’t wait to make it a new jewelry piece!
Beauty and the Beast is an absolute classic Disney movie. There are so many iconic components to this movie and I actually didn’t think I would ever make jewelry based on it for that reason. I tend to stray away from obvious references or “props” in my pieces because I like for my designs to remain subtle enough to wear every day without calling out too much attention. BUT…when I saw the rose bead I just knew I had to make a pair of earrings based on Beauty and the Beast.
I initially saw the rose bead while I was scanning the jewelry aisle in Michael’s as I do every so often. When I first started designing pieces, I would usually go to the store, stare at all the beads and colors, and then come up with an idea on the spot. Now, I’ve made it a habit to actually think through a design first and then look for materials that would help me bring it to life. I like to stick to this routine, but the rose bead threw me off! I obviously thought of the enchanted rose in Beauty and the Beast as soon as I saw it, but what really convinced me to make this inspired piece was the sapphire and gold bead I saw immediately after. Seeing these two beads at the same time was basically a sign that I had to include them in a jewelry piece. So I bought them and thought of a new, thoughtful, and Disney-themed design on my way home.
Here is what I landed on…
The main color scheme is based on the ballroom dance scene between Belle and the Beast since nothing beats the outfits and “Tale as Old as Time”!
The rose bead represents the enchanted rose that the enchantress gives the Beast after she’s cursed him. If he can’t learn to love another and earn their love in return by the time the last petal falls, then the curse becomes permanent…luckily Belle enters the story.
The bottom half of the earring represents both Beast and Belle:
The sapphire and gold bead contains the colors of the Beast’s classic suit. There are also two loops on either side of the bead. This represents the Beast’s two forms...the cursed monster and his true form, Prince Adam.
The bead hangs in the center of a gold triangle. This gold triangle represents Belle and her famous yellow ball gown. The triangle shape itself looks like the shape of her poofy dress.
Lastly, the sapphire and gold bead has a really beautiful reflective quality when the light hits it. This reminds me of the Beast’s magic mirror that served as his only window to the outside world for years.
This movie was one of my favorites growing up and I’m so happy to have created a pair of earrings that really represents the story. Most Disney movies, especially this one, are like a “comfort blanket” to me since they are able to pull me into another magical world whenever I need it. I hope I was able to do it justice and represent that warm feeling through this design!
